Sylvia Eckermann

Sylvia Eckermann’s art seeks the challenge between aesthetic practice and discourse, between the analogue and the digital, between solitary artistic work and collective processes. Her artistic exploration of form and media is based on a critical reflection on our entanglements as individuals in current socio-economic situations. Eckermann works with various media, such as digital and physical environments, installations, videos, objects and sculptures. She is considered a pioneer of game art, an art form that emerged in the late 1990s and transforms computer games into artistic formats. Since 2012, she has been creating sculptural works that interweave virtual and physical space. She was a member of the artist group Gangart (1987–1989) and fuchs-eckermann (1989–2004) and has been a member of the Technopolitics Research Group (since 2011). Together with Gerald Nestler, Eckermann developed the art series “The Future of Demonstration”, which has been exploring new formats and practices of art since 2017. Eckermann is the first recipient of the City of Vienna Media Art Award (2014) and was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Media Art (2018). She lives and works in Vienna.
