Marcella  Barone

Catania, Sicily (1965)

Multimedia artist, professor of Painting at the Academy of fine art in Catania since 1997. Co-founder in 2003 of SSRG, Sicilian Soundscape Research Group, an association for the promotion of a culture and practice of listening in the context of soundscape research.

She has been active as an artist since the early 1990s, constantly open to experimentation and exploring diverse practices. In a recent webinar, she summarized the last decade of her research with the title “Altra densità: passaggi di stato e soglie percettive tra materiale e immateriale” (A different density: passages of state and perceptual thresholds between material and immaterial). Her recent artistic practice focuses on identifying liminal and transitional zones in order to detect and reveal perceptual and conceptual interstitial elements where time and space dissolve into imperceptible mutations. An oscillation between the measurable and scientific and the mutable and sensible: through a fluid dialogue between the material and the immaterial, between analytical rigor and sensitive intuition, the work becomes an aesthetic device capable of evoking what escapes ordinary vision. Each intervention becomes an experience by triggering a shift of gaze and consciousness towards other dimensions—silent, marginal, or normally eluded by usual perception, the infra-subtle.
