Ondřej Vavrečka

Ondřej Vavrečka is a filmmaker, visual artist, musician and educator born in the Czech Republic. His work moves between speed and stillness, between flashes of improbable imagination and moments of lingering, attentive observation. He often draws from the materiality of things – shooting films on 16 mm stock or working through sewing – and from the recycling of matter, for example creating images and objects from metal beverage containers.

His works have been presented both nationally and internationally, and his films have received several awards. His visual art is represented in private and public collections, including the City Gallery Prague.

He teaches as an Associate Professor at FAMU’s Center for Audiovisual Studies, where he actively engages in international collaborations, research, and artistic pedagogy, linking practical creation with theoretical reflection.

Vavrečka’s interests range from the ecological and poetic world of lichens to philosophical thinking about the totality of the world, including his ongoing documentary musical on progress. His work also grows from an inner mental and emotional development, striving to capture the world as a layered, contradictory whole while maintaining an intimate sensitivity to the detail of everyday life.
