CARE & ACTION by “forum n“
CODES of CHANGE by Thomas J. Jelinek [AT/SE]
Since we encode our perception of external stimuli, such as light, waves, pressure, gravity, etc., and assemble them into holistic simulated images to navigate our environment, code is a fundamental building block of our existence. So, computers are not a novel invention but a logical development and consequence of our system of perceiving the world.
Yet, instead of partnership, AI generates crises in a distorted value model of late capitalism. Thomas J. Jelinek will explore model-based thinking and alternative methodologies to rewrite our coding.
Lecture presentation: 20:00 on Oct 23, Friday
(De)Coding otherwise – Arts and small AI by Christoph Hubatschke [AT]
The big tech corporations are at the moment not only developing the technologies, notably AI, that shape our societies, interactions, and politics, but they are also controlling the processes of decoding and encoding information, communication, and relations. These codes are extracting resources and knowledge and exploiting the land and people. Yet, dominant AI systems and their problems only tell one part of the AI story.
Proposing some lines of criticism to understand the current hegemonic politics of AI, the main part of the lecture will discuss some strategies and examples of doing AI differently by utilising arts-based methods and approaches. Christoph’s current project will be in focus, as it combines contemporary dance with developing a small AI system from scratch, exploring how we can indeed (de)code the world otherwise. Lecture: 20:15 on Oct 23, Friday

Olobionte [Holobiont] by Teodoro Agricola [IT]
Teodoro Agricola bases his artistic practice on a multidisciplinary language, incorporating sculpture, painting, photography, and digital animation. His research focuses primarily on the investigation of matter, through a comprehensive reconsideration of materialism, in which, commonly defined as inert, it is recognized as “alive”: an active subject that dynamically participates in natural cycles. This translates into works that constantly examine the microscopic and macroscopic, a practice in which scientific research dialogues with material experimentation, designed to bring to light what lies in the invisible and the dense network of natural connections.
His project Holobiont [Olobionte] reveals processes of various symbiotic models and develops corresponding sculptures as illustrative objects.
Presentation: 18:10 on Oct 23, Friday
Peradam by Skade Henriksen [NO]
We encounter the starting point of the Peradam artistic research project: a graphite mine on Senja / Sážžá in Troms county, Northern Norway. It began in 2017 with a material interest in graphite – a material tied to drawing, employment for the local community, and the ongoing green transition.
Over the course of the project, Skade Henriksen (Art Academy, University of Bergen) has repeatedly visited the mine and its surrounding landscape, while collaborating with specialists in geology and material research, incl. researchers at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) in Trondheim and the Department of Earth Science at the University of Bergen. To investigate and photograph graphite at different scales – not only the landscape but its microscopic structures – scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used. The landscape becomes both subject and resource, a site of tension between representation, materiality, extraction, and consumption.
The project has accumulated an extensive body of material: installations, photographic works, soundwork, objects, and two publications.
Presentation: 18:35 on Oct 23, Friday
shared worlds – simulations by Tanja Vujinovic [SI]
Tanja Vujinović (Ultramono) will present her digital simulation models and 3D worlds, which also exist physically, enabling a new definition of reality.
AVANTGARDENERS is a world in progress: a garden, a game, and an artificial ecology inhabited by beings that are still becoming. Biology, technology and imagination operate together, producing forms that shift between organism, avatar, habitat and object.
Avatars become organisms. Plants become structures. Interfaces become habitats. Bodies become environments. The gardeners are engaged in a mysterious game, moving through stages in an attempt to get hold of the sixth dimension.
Presentation: 20:30 on Oct 23, Friday
Organic Circuits – exhibition project by Jennifer Helia DeFelice [CZ/US]
Organic Circuits (LÁ Art Museum of South Iceland, Hveragerði, 2024) was a group exhibition situated at the intersection of art and science, curated by Jennifer Helia DeFelice and Kristin Scheving, which brought together artists whose practices rest on both empirical research and embodied, experiential knowledge of the more-than-human world.
Drawing on ideas of reciprocity, interconnectedness and cyclical time, the exhibition unsettled anthropocentric and extractive habits of perception. It also treats transformation and decay as generative processes within a wider ecology of life, rather than as endpoints.
How artistic research can inform our ways of living with ecological precarity will be discussed during the presentation.
